Mrs. Thompson hails from the lovely island of Jamaica where she got her teaching certificate at Shortwood Teachers College. She taught there for many years prior to her residing in the United States. She later earned a B.A. in Education from National Louis University, a Master's in Reading and Math for Elementary School Teachers both from Northeastern Illinois University. She also has her endorsement to teach math at the junior high level.
This is her 15th year in District 65. Mrs. Thompson has worn many hats as an ESL teacher for Caribbean students, ILP, Soar to Success, Phonemic Awareness at the Kindergarten level and Reading at the 7th grade level and for the past six years at the second grade level. Teaching is her passion and just being with the children. Teaching these little ones has been a delight as Mrs. Thompson watch them discover new things, understand difficult concepts, solve problems, work cooperatively together, move away from fear to trust, confidence and love, and overall, just to learn and grow.
High expectations, respect, safety, and choices are very important elements of Mrs. T.'s classroom environment. Students are encouraged to emulate and practice these on a daily basis as they work with math buddies, observe their mealworms, gather information for their biographies, read in their guided reading groups, walk in the hallways to and from fine arts, eat together in the lunchroom, play at recess, and upon entering and exiting the building.
