Homework Routines
Homework provides extra practice of new concepts and responsibilities. I tell second graders that their homework is their responsibility, including packing it up, bringing it to school, and turning it in.
Most of the time, homework should not take more than 10 minutes of focused work time. If, after 10 minutes of trying their best, your child is frustrated, please draw a line on the page, write "10 minutes," and pack it up. That will help me know how to provide support here at school.

Spelling
Each Tuesday your child will bring home a new set of Word Sort words - these are their spelling words for the week.
Word Sort routines are the same every week:
Monday = Spelling test with words from last weeks words
Tuesday = New words-cut, sort, & practice. Use in sentence
Wednesday = Practice sorting: choose unfamiliar word to talk about & illustrate
Thursday = Use: As many words in a story. Draw a picture.
I will send home new sorts and follow these routines every time we have a full week of school. On 4-day weeks, we will practice old sorts or work with Word Wall Words. Look for different activities in your child's planner during those weeks.

Reading
The best way to get better at reading is to practice, and we want second graders to spend 20 minutes a day reading outside of school. This is a chance for your child to pick a book they want to read and grow their love of reading. Reading time can be right after school, in the morning, or right before bed; it doesn't need to be a part of the rest of their "homework time," and it may even help to create a different time of day for reading so it doesn't feel like the same "task" as the rest of their homework. Whenever possible, this is a great time to read alongside your child - whether you are reading a book for pleasure, the newspaper, or even taking care of paperwork, seeing adults reading is one of the most powerful ways to encourage children to read.
